Lucetas and Mediopuntos : Lucetas and mediopuntos are tinted/colored glass ornate figures very much used in Cuba's house constructions, spanning from the Spanish Colonial era to the first decades of the XXth century. Lucetas are rectangular in shape and mediopuntos, the most beautiful and traditional, are semicircles. You can find them in the top part of windows and doors that open to balconies or to interior patios. Here you can find many examples of exhuberant lucetas and mediopuntos in Havana, many very well preserved, some famous ones even displayed in museums, and then the dilapidated, with missing color parts, in the interior of old residences, that I don't know why but are still my preferred. Many of these images have not been properly processed, hence were not tagged for prints, but if you are interested in some photos of these exquisite treasures, please contact me at jgavi@yahoo.om and I will be happy to produce it for you....

Havana - Vintage Cars and Bykes : Havana (and Cuba) is a paradise for American vintage cars (and bykes) lovers...you can find them everywhere, all the time, working as taxis ("boteros"), or belonging to "old car" clubs...it's simply amazing that in spite of the absolute US blockade of more than 40 years (no spares at all), many are running great with their original motors, and others with very ingenious adaptations....

Rio Almendares : The Almendares River is a modest water way that zigzags West of the Bay, sometimes as a boundary between neighborhoods like Vedado, Nuevo Vedado, Miramar, Marianao, Boyeros, etc. The forest associated with the last mile of the river, -known as El Bosque de La Habana (Havana Forest)-, is a narrow strip that spans along its West bank. Vegetation is exhuberant...and the place is a sanctuary for the Cuban vulture...

Blues of Havana : Blue is one of the colors I see Havana through...it was a colonial times color, judging from the old windows contrast on the white facades of old buildings...it is the color imposed by the Gulf of Mexico that limits the city on its north face, and that tints the skies all day...its is also a common color on common things...a selection of images of Havana where blue plays a significant role follows...

Hurricane Wilma - October 2005 (1) : Hurricane Wilma sideswiped Havana on October 24, 2005, on its way to Florida. The worst part was not the 100-136 km/h southeast winds that hammered all Sunday night, but the surge that started on Monday's eve, combined with a hide tide, when the eye of the hurricane passed 170 km to the North of the capital and the direction of the winds inverted. Never ever the waterfront of the capital had been struck in this way by immense waves and continuous flodding. The damage is huge in the Habana Vieja, Centro Habana, Vedado, and Miramar coastal areas, and in Santa Fe and Baracoa, two small coast villages West of the Capital. On Monday I went on shooting with my 16-year old son, Jose Victor. In the morning we shot Vedado, and parts of Miramar in the afternoon. Large areas of the famous Malecón (seawall) were simply turned into sea. Chunks of the wall were thrown blocks inland by the waves. Many times, the waves that broke in the Morro castle rock hill, on the other side of the Bay's entry channel, went over the lighthouse. The two tunnels that cross the Almendares river and that divide Vedado from Miramar were covered with water, as the images will show. In Marina Hemingway, the three channels were turned into a single waterway. In the next days, as things return to normal, I will shoot more...the images you will see now come straight out of SONY 828, and Canon 20D...for the sake of time, the only thing I have done is to sharpen a little the images, and reduce their size...no cropping, no post processing...

Guanabacoa : The town of Guanabacoa (la Villa de Pepe Antonio, in honor of the mayor of the town, that died fighting against the British invasion of Havana in 1792) is one of the three main towns that surround Havana Bay (being Casablanca and Regla the other two, and of course the City if San Cristóbal de la Habana)....it is known as the craddle of Afrocuban religion and music, and by its thematic museums....and the birthplace of my mother....I find the environment fascinating...this is just a first sample...3 hours walking around and shooting...
