We want to trap it alive but it flaps its wings and vanishes…” —Octavio Paz I have lived in Havana ever since my Cuban parents decided to return home from Chicago in 1950. In Havana I have grown from child to man to father, walking past the light and dark shades of life and love —all this while watching buildings and classic cars slip slowly into a state of ruined beauty, crying for mending and for that gallon of paint that is not always possible to find. I am not overwhelmed by the effects of time. Illusions always power my perception of the beauty that lies beneath the flickering contrasts of Havana—the double vision of what can be seen with the outer eye of the camera, with the inner eye of the heart.
